EMI INSPECTION Rods start the EMI by passing through a set of coils that subjects the rods to an eddy current. The eddy current measures the conductivity of a rod to detect metallurgy differences. This process is also used to monitor the grade of the rod. RMR uses the direct eddy current technique to measure the magnetic field around the rod. Next the rod runs through the transverse system. The transverse system (a coil to induce a magnetic field and air cushion transducers riding 360 degrees around the rod) detects any disturbances in the longitudinal field. Pits, cracks and tool marks are examples of defects that will disrupt the magnetic field. Finally, the rods pass the wear channel which is a group of small coils that measure the magnetic field around the rod. The holograph technique will detect any circumference wear on the rod. All the data taken from the EMI machine is recorded on a chart where a trained operator evaluates the report for each rod. |
